Child Care 101

Finding the right child care can take a lot of research. Knowing where to start can help make this process go much smoother. There are a variety of options when it comes to finding a caregiver for your child. Whether you choose a licensed day care center, a private babysitter, or in-home help, there are a variety of factors to consider before making a decision.

The Right Caregiver

An overwhelming majority of parents place their children in some type of daily care, so you are not alone. The first step in choosing the right child care is to make a list of the qualities you are looking for in a daycare provider. Do you want an environment where there is a single caregiver or a larger center with multiple adults?

Your Child’s Habits

Consider your child’s habits and how well he interacts with others. Is your child shy? Outgoing? Does he like to make new friends, or is he more introverted? Taking into account each of these qualities will help you decide what’s best for your child.

Child Care Recommendations

Once you have decided whether you want private day care or in-home caregiver, ask your family and friends for recommendations. This is the best way to find someone you will get along with, and allows you to ask questions about other parents’ experiences.

Questions for Caregivers

After identifying a list of possible caregivers, think about what it is you are looking for, and make a list of questions to ask. You want to treat this as an informal interview to determine if each caregiver is a good fit for your child. Remember: Although your task is to find the best environment for your child, you will also want to find a caregiver who you feel comfortable talking to. You should be able to communicate with this person.
