Learning Over the Summer

Learning Over the Summer

Keep your child on track through summer learning

Your child may not be very enthusiastic about learning over the summer. But it is a good idea to encourage his progress by enrolling him in a summer tutoring program, or providing him with other ways to learn. You can be your child's tutor, or you can get him one through school or a learning center. Either way, the important thing is to keep him interested and excited about learning.

Establishing and keeping a weekly tutoring schedule is very important. Each week you may give him a book to read, and two or three times a week, you can sit down together and discuss his book. You can ask him to write a brief report on the book, or keep a reading journal to write down his impressions of the book, which will also help improve his writing skills.

Whether he is practicing reading, math, or science, engage him in conversation about his subject. Be motivated and your motivation will be contagious. If he is studying science or math, you can schedule a trip to a technological museum, so that he can see what great scientific and mathematical minds are capable of accomplishing. This will give him a positive attitude and a new perspective on learning.

Finally, when your child makes progress—especially during the summer—you should reward him. Taking him to a movie or visit an ice cream parlor or toy store to encourage his efforts.
