Learning Style Assessment
Understanding your child's unique learning style
Everyone has their own preferred and effective way of acquiring information and knowledge. Some of us are auditory, some visual, and others are tactile learners. It's also possible to have a combination of learning styles. Determining your child's unique learning style early in his education is important to his academic future. Many children enjoy having stories told to them, like listening to music, and prefer to talk out problems, rather than quietly think about them. If this sounds like your child, he most likely has an auditory learning style. He will probably do well in classes that offer lectures and with teachers who encourage students to ask questions. If your child is an auditory learner, engage him in conversation about school—this will encourage him to recall what he has learned and remind him what he had trouble with. Together, you can solve his confusion.
Many children excel when they are presented with interactive coursework. Online programs are designed to assist your child in learning or understanding lessons when he has specific problems. Coursework is often delivered and then reviewed and graded by a trained professional.
The third type of learner is tactile. The tactile learner prefers to touch and build objects in order to understand a problem. If your child exhibits this type of behavior, he has a strong spatial understanding, but may find abstract concepts difficult to understand. If your child is a tactile learner, he may enjoy legos, blocks, and building sand castles.
There is no “right” way to learn. One learning style isn't better than another. But figuring out how your child learns will better equip you to assist him with academic success.
