Homeschooling

What is homeschooling?

Homeschooling is a method of education in which you teach your child at home with a curriculum and lesson plans. Laws regarding homeschooling vary from state to state; however, all states are ultimately accountable for students' learning. If you are interested in homeschooling, you can register with your local school district and receive standard expectations for your child's academic development. Many states want attendance records and expect that home-schooled children will participate in statewide standardized testing.

When homeschooling your child, you have control over how and what he is taught, as well as the ability to provide undivided attention. You will know about his progress and challenges firsthand, and will be able to immediately identify any areas of weakness.

Some homeschooling programs encourage small group learning, where other homeschooling parents will invite students into their home. Children still receive attention and can develop their social skills at the same time.

Homeschooling families often enroll children in community physical education classes, or individual sports lessons to fulfill the physical education portion of their curriculum.

Homeschooling can be very rewarding for parents who have the time and dedication and for students who need a little more control over their learning pace and environment. In addition, if your child is very social and needs more attention from peers, it would be a good idea to introduce other opportunities to meet friends through community programs or learning groups.
