Writing tips to improve your child's writing skills

When your child starts to write for school, he should start with good habits techniques which will help improve writing skills. Read below for some helpful, easy to remember writing tips to help your child.

The first thing that he needs to do is be certain that he understands the assignment. Read over the assignment with him and discuss it with him so that you know he understands what is expected of him. The next step after you know that he understands the subject well is to give him some writing tips that will help him develop the content.

Make sure that your child focuses on what he wants to say. A good way to help him learn to do this is by teaching him to free write and brainstorm. This will get his ideas flowing, and he will begin his project.

Be certain that your child understands what plagiarism is and why it is unacceptable. Taking other people's ideas or words and putting your name on them is often heavily punished in schools.

Once your child has produced a draft of his work, read it for him. Teach him how to run a spell check on the document. Then check the essay or document for continuity and clarity of ideas.

After your child has edited the work, have him read it aloud to you. Oftentimes, students will find their own errors this way, and will change the wording for better flow and comprehension. This will help him understand the importance of voice and tone in his work.

Finally, once your child has received the project back from his teacher, and it has been graded, review it with him. Teach him to go over his mistakes and ask his teacher about anything that confuses him that was marked wrong. This way, he will be less likely to make the same mistake twice.
